LED Downlight Retrofitting: Is It Worth It for North Shore Homes?

If your home still has halogen downlights, you’re spending more on electricity than you need to. LED retrofitting is one of the most cost-effective electrical upgrades available — but there are some things to know before you start.
Halogen vs LED: The Real Difference
A typical halogen downlight draws around 50 watts. An equivalent LED draws just 8–10 watts — an 80% reduction in energy consumption. With 20 downlights in a typical North Shore home, that’s the difference between 1,000W and 160–200W every time your lights are on. Over a year, that’s a meaningful saving on your energy bill.
LEDs also run much cooler than halogens. Halogen bulbs generate significant heat, which can be a fire risk if insulation covers the fitting and the downlight isn’t rated IC-F (insulation contact, fire-rated). LED retrofits often eliminate this risk entirely.
Can You Just Swap the Bulbs?
In many cases, yes — GU10 halogen fittings can accept a direct GU10 LED replacement. However, the transformer (or “driver”) in older low-voltage halogen systems may not be compatible with LED globes, causing flickering, buzzing, or early failure. A licensed electrician can assess your existing fittings and advise whether a simple globe swap or a full fitting replacement is the better option.
Full Fitting Replacement vs Globe Swap
Replacing the entire fitting — rather than just the globe — gives you a cleaner result, access to better quality fittings with better light distribution, and eliminates compatibility issues entirely. Modern LED downlights are slim, dimmable, and available in a range of colour temperatures to suit any room. The cost is higher upfront but the long-term reliability is worth it.
Dimming Compatibility
Not all LED globes or fittings are dimmable, and not all dimmers are compatible with LEDs. If you have existing dimmer switches, check compatibility before purchasing LEDs. Your electrician can replace older dimmers with LED-compatible models at the same time as the retrofit.
What Does It Cost?
LED retrofitting typically costs between $15 and $40 per downlight installed, depending on whether you’re doing a globe swap or full fitting replacement. Most North Shore homes see payback within 2–3 years through energy savings alone.
