Solar-Ready Electrical Upgrades: Preparing Your Home for Solar Panels

Solar panels are an excellent investment for North Shore homeowners — with Sydney’s sunshine hours and current feed-in tariffs, a well-sized system pays for itself within a few years. But before the solar installer arrives, it’s worth understanding what your electrical system needs to be ready.
Switchboard Assessment
A solar inverter requires a dedicated circuit and a spare slot in your switchboard. If your board is old, has ceramic fuses, or is already full, an upgrade may be required before solar can be installed. Some solar installers will quote switchboard upgrades themselves; others will require you to engage a separate electrician. Either way, factor this into your overall budget.
Modern switchboards with appropriate safety switches and circuit breakers are also required by Ausgrid before they will approve a solar connection to the grid.
Metering
To export power to the grid and receive feed-in tariff payments, you’ll need a smart meter (also called an interval meter or bidirectional meter). If you still have an older accumulation meter, your energy retailer will arrange a meter upgrade when you connect solar. This is typically done free of charge, though it’s worth confirming with your retailer.
Roof Wiring and Conduit
The DC cabling from your solar panels runs from the roof to the inverter (usually mounted near the switchboard). This cabling must be correctly sized, UV-rated, and protected with conduit where it runs through accessible areas. Your solar installer handles the panel mounting, but the inverter connection to the switchboard must be done by a licensed electrician and certified.
Battery Readiness
If you think you might add a battery system in the future, discuss this with your electrician now. A battery-ready installation includes appropriate conduit pathways, a suitable location for the battery unit, and may involve a different inverter selection (hybrid inverters handle both solar and battery in one unit).
Getting the Order Right
Switchboard upgrade first, solar installation second, battery later if desired. Getting the sequence right saves time and avoids expensive rework. Leenderts Electrical coordinates solar-ready upgrades across the North Shore. Call 0407 743 963 to plan your installation.
