Annual Electrical Maintenance Checklist for Sydney Homeowners

Most homeowners service their car regularly without thinking twice, but when did you last think about maintaining your home’s electrical system? An annual check takes just a few minutes and can identify developing issues before they become expensive — or dangerous — problems.

Test Your Safety Switches

Every RCD (safety switch) in your switchboard has a test button. Press it — the circuit should immediately trip. If it doesn’t, the switch is faulty and must be replaced. Reset it by switching it back on. This test should be done every six months or at minimum annually. If your switchboard has no safety switches at all, contact an electrician immediately.

Test Your Smoke Alarms

Press the test button on every smoke alarm in the house. Each should sound loudly. A weak or non-existent response means the battery is flat or the alarm is faulty. Replace batteries in standard battery-operated alarms and consider upgrading to hardwired or 10-year sealed battery models for greater reliability.

Inspect Power Points and Switches

Walk through the house and look at every power point and switch. Cracked faceplates, discolouration, or scorch marks are warning signs. Wiggle any power point that seems loose in the wall — a loose fitting can cause arcing. Any damaged or discoloured fitting should be replaced by a licensed electrician.

Check Outdoor Fittings

Outdoor power points, light fittings, and sensor lights take a beating from UV, rain, and temperature changes. Check for cracked covers, corroded contacts, or fittings that have pulled away from the wall. Outdoor fittings should be IP-rated (splash or weatherproof) and properly sealed.

Look in the Switchboard

Open your switchboard and look for signs of overheating (discolouration, melted plastic, burn marks), corrosion, or cables that appear to have been disturbed. Don’t touch anything — just look. If anything looks wrong, call an electrician.

Check Appliance Cords

Inspect the power cords of regularly used appliances for damage, kinking, or cracking near the plug. Damaged cords should be repaired by an authorised repairer or the appliance replaced. Never use tape as a permanent fix for a damaged cord.
