EV Charger Installation: A Guide for North Shore Homeowners
Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly common on Sydney’s North Shore, and with good reason. But if you’ve just picked up an EV — or you’re considering one — you’ll quickly realise that a standard power point simply isn’t good enough for overnight charging. A dedicated home EV charger is the answer.
Level 1 vs Level 2 Charging: What’s the Difference?
Level 1 charging uses a standard 10A power point and provides around 8–12 km of range per hour. For most drivers, this is painfully slow. Level 2 charging uses a dedicated 32A circuit and a wall-mounted EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment), delivering 20–80+ km of range per hour depending on your vehicle. Most North Shore homeowners who install a charger go with Level 2.
What Does Installation Involve?
A licensed electrician will run a dedicated circuit from your switchboard to the garage or carport, install a weatherproof enclosure for the EVSE unit, and ensure the installation complies with AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules. If your switchboard is older or doesn’t have spare capacity, an upgrade may be required first.
Most installations take half a day. Your electrician will also issue a Certificate of Compliance (CCEW) for the work, which is required by your energy retailer and insurer.
Which Charger Should I Choose?
There are several quality brands available in Australia — Zappi, Wallbox, JET Charge, and Schneider Electric are popular choices. Key features to look for include smart scheduling (to charge during off-peak tariffs), solar integration (to prioritise charging from your panels), and app control. Your electrician can advise on compatibility with your vehicle and your home’s energy setup.
What Does It Cost?
Expect to pay around $800–1,800 for installation, depending on cable run length and switchboard condition, plus the cost of the EVSE unit itself (typically $500–1,500). Federal and state rebates may apply depending on your circumstances — check the latest incentives before you commit.
