Ceiling fans are one of Australia’s most popular home comfort solutions. They’re energy-efficient, relatively affordable, and effective at making a room feel cooler without the running costs of air conditioning. But when it comes to installation, there’s an important legal line that homeowners need to be aware of.

Can I Install a Ceiling Fan Myself?

In short: no. In NSW, connecting any electrical appliance to the fixed wiring of a home is considered electrical wiring work and must be performed by a licensed electrician. This includes ceiling fans. Even if you’re replacing an existing fan on an existing bracket, the electrical connection must be made by a licensed person.

This isn’t just a legal technicality — incorrectly installed ceiling fans can be a serious safety and fire hazard. A ceiling fan that isn’t properly secured or wired can fall, overheat, or cause an electrical fault.

What Does Installation Involve?

A licensed electrician will check that the existing ceiling structure can support the fan’s weight (fans require a rated mounting point, not just a standard light fitting bracket), connect the fan to the existing wiring or run a new circuit if required, and test the fan and any included remote or wall control. The work is typically straightforward and takes 1–2 hours per fan.

Choosing the Right Fan

Before purchasing, consider the room size — blade span is the key spec. Small rooms (under 10m²) suit fans up to 1200mm; larger rooms need 1400–1500mm spans. For rooms with low ceilings, a hugger-style fan (without a drop rod) keeps the blades safely clear of head height. DC motor fans are quieter and more energy-efficient than AC models and are increasingly the preferred choice.

Adding a Wall Control or Remote

Many modern fans include a remote control, but a wall-mounted controller is often more convenient. Your electrician can install a dedicated wall switch with fan speed and light control at the same time as fitting the fan.
