USB Power Points: Are They Worth Installing in Your Sydney Home?

Walk into any newly renovated kitchen or bedroom on the North Shore and you’ll likely find at least one power point with built-in USB ports. They’re practical, they look clean, and they eliminate the need for bulky USB charger plugs. But are they worth the extra cost, and are there any downsides?

The Appeal of USB Power Points

The main advantage is convenience. A USB-A or USB-C port built into the wall means you can charge phones, tablets, and other devices without occupying a standard socket with a bulky plug. They’re particularly popular in kitchens (for recipe browsing while cooking), bedrooms (bedside charging), and home offices.

USB-A vs USB-C: Getting the Right Type

Older USB power points use USB-A ports, which are the rectangular connectors found on most older cables. However, the industry has rapidly shifted to USB-C — the smaller oval connector used by modern phones, tablets, laptops, and accessories. When purchasing, look for power points with USB-C ports (ideally with Power Delivery capability for faster charging), or a combination of USB-A and USB-C if you have older devices to consider.

Charging Speed Matters

Not all USB power points charge at the same rate. Budget versions may only deliver 5W — painfully slow for modern devices. Look for models offering at least 18W (USB-C Power Delivery) for smartphones, and 45W+ if you want to charge laptops. Check the specifications before buying, not just the number of ports.

The Potential Downside: Technology Obsolescence

The main criticism of USB power points is that USB standards evolve. A power point installed with USB-A ports today may feel dated in five years. One mitigation is to choose models with replaceable USB modules — some manufacturers allow the USB insert to be swapped as standards change, without replacing the entire faceplate.

Installation

USB power points are installed exactly like standard power points and require a licensed electrician. They’re an excellent addition during any renovation or switchplate replacement project. The cost premium over a standard power point is typically $50–150 per point depending on the brand and USB specification.
